Character Bio: Kaladin

From The Fool's Aftermath Wiki
Kaladin Rakkan's patron is a kraken. A terribly powerful, intelligent creature that lives in the depths of the ocean, responsible for the deaths of many a sailor. Except this kraken can't use its giant tentacles or magical powers to terrorize seafaring folk -- many years ago, possibly by another band of powerful adventurers or even the gods themselves, this kraken was magically sealed, imprisoned in the depths of the ocean. At first it could barely move from its lair, but over the years its great intellect has allowed it to use its powers to its own gain. However, there's only so much it can do from the depths of the ocean, and so it has been looking for someone through which it can learn more about its magical prison.

Enter half-elf Kaladin Rakkan. Kaladin was born and raised in the Principality of Panvilia, in the home town of his human mother. As a child, his mother would often regale him with tales of the adventures of his elven father. Kaladin never knew his father himself -- he'd left on a trip ship months before Kaladin was born, and never returned, leaving behind his books and belongings. Kaladin taught himself about the beyond his home town from his father's books and spent his childhood yearning to travel the world he read about.

When he came of age, he couldn't afford passage on the Great Sea himself, so he became a sailor on a merchant ship, ferrying goods between the eight countries. He spent a few years on different ships, trying to find any hint of his father, until, on a particularly dangerous trip through the Kraken's stormy waters, his ship was destroyed, killing the entire crew.

As Kaladin drifted into the depths, on the brink of death, the Kraken saw an opportunity. It restored Drake to health, and struck a deal. In exchange for access to the (limited) power the Kraken had on this realm from its prison, Drake would go into the world and try to find a way to release the Kraken. The Kraken granted him otherworldly powers, and returned him to land. Kaladin quest -- to find a way to repay his debt and release the Kraken.

Kaladin did not study arcana in his youth, but knew where to find those who studied magic for a lifetime -- the Sunwilian Theocracy. There he traveled, beginning his studies of magic and the history of Yon'ver, pretending to be a novice wizard with an interest in magical seals, until his call to action...
