The Kraken is an otherworldly monstrosity that lurks in the ocean around Yon'ver. It is immensely intelligent, powerful, and old, and is at odds with a god of the Outer Planes, Cthulhu, for reasons unknown. It was sealed away with a powerful Imprisonment spell in the distant past, but was freed by its warlock, Kaladin Rakkan, and now roams in the oceans of Yon'ver.

Description

Appearance

The Kraken is a massive, brown-gray aquatic creature with innumerable tentacles. Its carapace was large enough to be the entirety of Nedia Island.

Abilities

Although the Kraken is aquatic, it is amphibious and possesses the ability to travel on land for an indefinite amount of time. It is extremely strong, able to destroy ships and buildings with immense force. It also possesses great magical power, and is able to call down lightning at will, transport itself and others hundreds of miles, and control the oceans around its lair.

Relationships

The Kraken is mortal enemies with Cthulhu of the Outer Planes. It acts as a patron to adventurer Kaladin Rakkan. Its relationship to the Grindelow Queen is, in mortal terms, similar to that of a co-worker it used to work with some time ago who they were never on especially close terms with, but who they would have amicable conversation with if they met them on the street.

Imprisonment

At some distant point in the past, the Kraken was imprisoned, presumably by Cthulhu, who is one of its ancient enemies. The power of the Imprisonment far exceeded normal mortal power, and had four separate magical components, encompassing four types of Imprisonment: Burial, Chaining, a Hedged Prison, and Slumber.

Slumber

This component consisted of a bundle of fine soporific herbs, forcing the Kraken into a deep slumber. It was guarded by a Spectator near a small town in Whaken.

Burial

This component was a small mithral orb, burying the Kraken deep below the earth. It was embedded into the forehead of a red slaad as a control gem in the grung city of Mojesh.

Chaining

This component was a fine green chain, binding the Kraken with magical restraints. It was stored in the magical storeroom of Syrune Evioro in Drakengar.

Hedged Prison

This component was a small jade figurine of a tree, trapping the Kraken in a pocket dimension. It was guarded by an Elder Brain in a city of Cyfalos.

Release

In 1926 PR, the Kraken resurrected Kaladin Rakkan, a drowned sailor, in the seas around Nedia Island. It granted him magical power, causing Kaladin to become a warlock of the Kraken, and compelled him to break the Imprisonment spell as payment for his new life.

Over the span of several months, Kaladin traveled with a party of adventurers, Mahilk Chad and El, seeking out and destroying the spell components that held the Imprisonment spell together. After the last component of the spell was destroyed, the Kraken was released from its imprisonment, and was then immediately attacked by several Star Spawn of Cthulhu. Assisted by Kaladin, the Kraken drove the heralds of Cthulhu off, and returned to the ocean.

Current Day

The Kraken now lurks around the oceans of Yon'ver. Soon after being released, the Kraken helped transport the Grindelow Queen from her lake in Skartu back to the ocean, in exchange for a partnership of sorts with them. In exchange for permanently distorting the fabric of Kaladin Rakkan's existence into something more aberrant monstrosity than human, the Kraken imbued Kaladin with innate, abberant, magical power, transforming him into a sorcerer.
