Lily Rakkan wearing leather armor. |
Lily Rakkan, known by some as the Blood-Red Lily, is a half-orc warrior, barbarian, fighter, and former adventurer. She is the mother of Kaladin Rakkan.
Appearance
Lily is half-human and half-orc, with relatively long dark brown hair, tan skin, and small protruding canine teeth. She is tall and extremely muscular. Her hair is usually worn in a tight braid or bun behind her head.
Early Life
Lily couldn't have been older than fifteen when she first awoke her rage. The bandits that attacked her town while she was out hunting took most of the things she valued, including her older sister. When she rushed after them to rescue her and saw her sister restrained and hurt, something primal bubbled up from deep within her. It felt like acid, searing away at the inside of her mind. It felt like the physical limits on her body were being loosened. It felt... good.
When she came to, she was surrounded by the bloody corpses of the bandits, her sister trembling in fear not of the assailants, but of her.
The next day, she left home. She was afraid of the dangers of the rest of Yon'ver, but more afraid of the danger she might pose to her family. Lily resolved herself to learn to control this new power, and set off. Perhaps she would find someone who could teach her at the capital.
Adventuring
Some time later, Lily learned there were many people like her, those who found themselves more powerful, more cunning, or more skilled than their friends and family, who were driven to a solitary life honing their own abilities. Most people called them adventurers. She had found herself a teacher in a more senior adventurer, who gave her formal combat training, and taught her how and when to use her rage to her advantage. She had even formed a party with her new friends, and wandered for a while, seeing what the continent had.
Eventually, she realized she had accomplished her goal -- her rage was well under control, and at this point she was much more of a trained warrior than a raging barbarian, even though some called her Blood-Red Lily for how she sometimes arose from a vicious melee, dripping with both her blood and enemies'.
Retirement & Marriage
She told her party she was retiring, and although they were sad to see her go, they wished her well.... except for one person. Alinar Dae'wyn, an elven bard, proposed to her on the spot. Some say love blooms wherever it is planted, and it seemed the battlefield was no exception.
They settled down, and eventually had a child on the way. They were ready -- she would them strength, and he would teach them cunning. Until Alinar was called for one last job, one request to celebrate his retirement. He promised to return within the month.
Lily waited, but Alinar never returned. It hurt -- losing a loved one always did -- but adventurers did not stay adventurers for long if they could not handle loss. Lily moved on, as always -- if their child could not have two parents, one would have to do. The child was born, and she named him Kaladin. From his looks alone, she knew he was his father's child.
Current-Day
Kaladin seemed to be a bit reclusive, preferring to stay inside his father's old study and read books about the world rather than go make friends outside (Lily did not -- and may never -- realize this is at least partially due to the other kids being far too scared of Kaladin's terrifyingly strong mother to make friends with him). It was a surprise, then, when Kaladin turned of age and suddenly said he wanted to be a sailor and see the world for himself. Perhaps wanderlust ran in the family.
He left, and the house was empty save for her. Lily took it in stride -- she was not one to idle, so the time she spent raising Kaladin was now time spent keeping up her combat training. It had been a little while since she had freely trained, since it wasn't exactly safe to be swinging a greatsword around a small child.
Kaladin sent letters every few months or so, detailing the things he saw and the places he'd been to. This time, though, it was already more than six months since the last letter. Just when she started to wonder if he had forgotten to write, a letter appeared at her doorstep. It was made of very fine parchment, and the calligraphy was so ornate as to almost be unreadable.
It read, "Dear sir, ma'am, etc., You are formally invited to the wedding of Lovrias Jaderiver..."
