Abilities

Kalashtar Abilities

Mahilk has abilities granted by his race as a Kalashtar, with an inner Quori spirit:

  • Severed from Dreams: Kalashtar sleep, but they don’t connect to the plane of dreams as other creatures do. Instead, their minds draw from the memories of their otherworldly spirit while they sleep. As such, Mahilk is immune to magical spells and effects that require him to dream, like the Dream spell, but not to spells and effects that put him to sleep, like the Sleep spell.<ref name="kalashtar">http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/kalashtar</ref>
  • Psychic Glamour: Advantage on all ability checks made with persuasion.<ref name="kalashtar" />
  • Dual Mind: When Mahilk makes a Wisdom saving throw, he can his your reaction to gain advantage on the roll. He can use this trait immediately before or after his roll, but before any of the roll's effects occur.<ref name="kalashtar" />
  • Mental Discipline: Resistance to psychic damage.<ref name="kalashtar" />
  • Mind Link: You can speak telepathically to any creature he can see within 60 feet of you. He doesn't need to share a language with the creature for it to understand his telepathic messages, but the creature must be able to understand at least one language or be telepathic itself. As a bonus action when he's speaking telepathically to a creature, he can give that creature the ability to speak telepathically to him until the start of your next turn. To use this ability, the creature must be within 60 feet of Mahilk and be able to see him.<ref name="kalashtar" />

Grave Cleric Abilities

Mahilk has abilities granted by his class and subclass as a Grave Cleric:

  • Ritual Casting: Mahilk can cast a cleric spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and he has the spell prepared.<ref name="cleric">http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/cleric</ref>
  • Circle of Mortality: When Mahilk would normally roll one or more dice to restore hit points with a spell to a creature at 0 hit points, they instead use the highest number possible for each die. In addition, they learn the Spare the Dying cantrip, which doesn't count against the number of cleric cantrips they know. For Mahilk, it has a range of 30 feet, and he can cast it as a bonus action.<ref name="cleric" />
  • Eyes of the Grave: As an action, Mahilk can open his awareness to magically detect undead. Until the end of his next turn, you know the location of any undead within 60 feet of you that aren't behind total cover and that aren't protected from divination magic. This sense doesn't tell him anything about a creature's capabilities or identity. You can use this feature a number of times equal to his Wisdom modifier (10). He regains all expended uses when he finishes a long rest<ref name="grave_cleric">http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/cleric:grave</ref>.
  • Channel Divinity: When Mahilk uses Channel Divinity, he chooses which effect to create. They must then finish a short or long rest to use Channel Divinity again. When they use such an effect from this class, the DC equals their cleric spell save DC (18). He can use his Channel Divinity twice between rests When he finishes a short or long rest, he regains his expended uses.<ref name="cleric" />
    • Turn Undead: As an action, Mahilk presents his holy symbol and speaks a prayer censuring the undead. Each undead that can see or hear him within 30 feet of you must make a Wisdom saving throw. If the creature fails its saving throw, it is turned for 1 minute or until it takes any damage. A turned creature must spend its turns trying to move as far away from him as it can, and it can't willingly move to a space within 30 feet of you. It also can't take reactions. For its action, it can use only the Dash action or try to escape from an effect that prevents it from moving. If there's nowhere to move, the creature can use the Dodge action.<ref name="cleric" />
    • Path to the Grave: As an action, Mahilk choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of him, cursing it until the end of his next turn. The next time he or an ally hits the cursed creature with an attack, the creature has vulnerability to all of that attack's damage, and then the curse ends.<ref name="grave_cleric" />
  • Destroy Undead: When an undead fails its saving throw against Mahilk's Turn Undead feature, the creature is instantly destroyed if its challenge rating is at or below a certain threshold.<ref name="cleric" />
  • Sentinel at Death's Door: As a reaction when Mahilk or an ally that he can see within 30 feet of him suffers a critical hit, he can turn that attack into a normal hit. Any effects triggered by a critical hit are canceled. He can use this feature a number of times equal to his Wisdom modifier (10). He regains all expended uses when he finishes a long rest.<ref name="grave_cleric" />
  • Potent Spellcasting: Mahilk adds his Wisdom modifier to the damage he deals with any cleric cantrip.<ref name="grave_cleric" />
  • Divine Intervention: Mahilk can call on the god Hades to intervene on his behalf when his need is great. Imploring your deity’s aid requires him to use his action. He describe the assistance he seeks, and rolls percentile dice. If he rolls a number equal to or lower than his cleric level (15), Hades intervenes. The DM chooses the nature of the intervention; the effect of any cleric spell or cleric domain spell would be appropriate. If Hades intervenes, he can’t use this feature again for 7 days. Otherwise, he can use it again after he finishes a long rest.<ref name="cleric" />

Early Life

Mahilk was born in 1269 PR, in Aleaak, a walled mountaintop city in the Hounhilian Empire.

Magical Training

Mahilk spent his early childhood raised in the spiritual guidance of the elders in his community. This entailed gaining control and understanding of his Quori spirit and innate psychic nature as a Kalashtar. As a young adult, Mahilk chose to become a Grave Cleric and worship Hades as his primary god. While undergoing his studies, Mahilk became largely nocturnal and rarely left his home, only leaving to undertake grave digging for his community. It was around this time he found Bones wandering the streets of Aleaak, and adopted him for his unique spot arrangement, reminiscent of a skeleton. On completion of his studies, Hades granted Mahilk the ability to use magic in his name, as well as the ability to discern where people’s souls travelled when they died. Mahilk began using his magic and keen psychic intuition to study fortune telling as a hobby.

Exile from Aleaak

In Marpenoth 1296 PR, three high elders of Aleaak spiritual society died within 10 days of each other. Mahilk had visions of each in the Fiendish Planes, interpreting this as a sign of their moral demise while alive. Mahilk reported this to the Kalashtar leaders, who exiled him from the village for heresy. After leaving the city, Mahilk began travel north of Aleaak, keeping along the eastern boarders of the Hounhilian and Nucholian Empires, eventually ending up in Krorat.

Adventuring Career

Personal Life

Mahilk's upbringing focused on an individual's dual Quori spirit, which is inherently fluid and transferrable. Because of this, he does not place emphasis on gender distinctions, and views them also as fluid and transferrable. Mahilk appears confused when asked about his gender and sexuality, but places little emphasis on defining either. This prevents Mahilk from fully comprehending that he is gay, though he already lives his life as a queer person. Mahilk's gender will never be fully understood or recorded, though he presents masculine.

Mahilk is casually intimately involved with Jenves Dhunesath, and has shown interest in others.

Mahilk normally enjoys music, when it does not have catastrophic side effects. His music taste (if in the modern world) has been approximated.
